※ FUTURE HOSPITAL
It is a place where connects life and death, which occupies an important partof everybody’s lifelong time. It’s a start point of one’s life, which brings people happiness of newborn; it’s a place helping people come back to health, which gives people hopes; at the same time, it’s also the final place to lots of people. In modern society, it’s somewhere to heal the injured by organizing and allocating of public’s resources, and much more, it witness a time that hardness to one’s life and drastically change in the relationship with the others and the society. It’s a building that manifest concerns of a modern society to an individual, which we hope could be expressed by future architect using new methods and concepts.
Now cancer has increasingly been main deadly cause to people’s health, so we consider that it is meaningful inpractice to design Cancer Hospital.
American Cancer Society report that because of change in daily life style caused by economic development, the rate of cancer patient in developing country is going up. According to latest data from World Health Organization, before the deadline of 2020, the rate with cancer in the global will increase by 50 percent, i.e. each year there will be about 15 million new cancer patients. The number of persons dying of cancer is also surging up, in 2007 there totally were 7.6m people dying of that disease in the whole world, maybe in 2030 the number will expand to 13.2m. Additively, China has 20 % of global new cancer patient and 24% of the deaths of cancer.
“A truly modernized public building for medical treatment should answerthe question immediately to everyone who is in it: are you safe?”
Compared with other buildings there are more specialties in hospital’s building with numerous complex department, systems and equipment, whose target users from ordinary people, medical worker to patients and their families and so on, who have different requirements. Because of hospitals’ specialties, it indeed need a more comfortable and warmer environment which could ease and console one’s soul. However, currently in China, equipment, architecture and other hardware device for hospital have a distance from foreign counties, so we wish that human care could absorb much more attentions by this designing competition.
※ GREEN HOSPITAL
Green Buildings refer to those within their useful life period could save resources to a great extent (energy, land, water, material), protecting environment and decreasing pollution, and then, they provide people with healthy, comfortable and highly available space as well as harmony with nature.
----------Standard of Green Building Assessment
Since sixties of twentieth’ century, Paul Soleri, an American architect, put forward a new concept of ecological building, and after the following 40 years, sustainable concept is accepted and spread around the world, and currently many countries have their own Green Building Standards.
In fact, Green is a kind of ethical concept as well. What ethics matters is the relationship between one personand another as well as nature. Green Building justly needs architects considering these aspects. When a hospital is established in busy district of big city, from the outside, how to take those things into account that using and allocating social resources, avoiding panic and fear of surroundings’ residents, coping with relationship with community and becoming a organic whole with others, while from the inside, hospitals should supply patients with outpatient service, in hospitaltreatment and palliative care. But also hospitals provide patients’ families with access to visit them and space to closer patients. From perspectives of sustainable development, hospitals should offer measures of public education, equipment for workers from abroad or at home to research, and equipment for training staff of nursing, palliative care and instructing patients’ families.
※ FUTURE HOSPITAL
In 1938 Worth published a paper Urban Life as a Way of Life which is considered as a meaningful article in the process of Urban Sociology’sdevelopment. He argues that urban life’s characters derive from city’s size, density and heterogeneity, that is, features of city life is determined by city’s space,
New City Life Movement is a revolution of city’s development which started from America in late 20th centuries and at the core of which is to seek for ideal urban life in the American heart. American people look forward to suburban life with cottage and flowers, so mid-class leave away from city. In the following that urbanization spread to peri-urban and center of city is shrinking. Therefore, Douala who is a representative of New City Movement thinks that revolution of life style changes city’s space and to a degree direction and way of development of a city.
As a center for economics, politics and culture of modern life, city has an intimate relation with the development of civilization. Development of city is a symbol of civilization while civilization also takes development of city as an indispensable part.
Along with development and boom with a city, there are series of inevitable issues coming out, one of which typifies in heavier and heavier sense of alienation. From perspective of environmental psychology, sense of alienation is a kind of feeling that one feels that he/she doesn’t belong to any group and no one cares about him/she. Faith between one and another is lost and city turns out to be a freezing home in which life begins to be dominated by indifference. Louis Worth states that city life break down relationships within relatives and neighbors, both of which are traditional base for society controlling and uniting. City residents who look like anonymous are just light friendship with each other and indifferent with others, even one is killed.
However, hospitals not only make one feel alienated at first sight, but also are daunting. How to propose a reasonable planning and layout to make cancer hospital more friendly to community around it and the whole city is a problem needing competitors to discuss and solve.
