Implementing International Business Ethics in an Asian Context
Educational Seminar
The Center for International Business Ethics at the University of International Business and Economics, Beijing, in cooperation with the Gov Jose B Fernandez Jr. Ethics Center, at the Ateneo de Manila University, is pleased to announce a multi-stage educational seminar for teachers and practitioners of business ethics in the East Asian and Southeast Asian regions. Its first stage will be a seminar at the Ateneo de Manila University, on August 20-21, 2010. The following stages will be scheduled in the month of August 2011 and 2012.
Background and Rationale
There is growing evidence that in the context of still pervasive and rampant corruption a systematic teaching of the key values and issues as developed in the academic discipline of international business ethics is urgently needed. There is also ample empirical evidence that a growing number of institutions of Higher Education in Asia integrate courses on business ethics into their curriculum. However, even with the support of school authorities it is quite challenging to come up with appropriate, efficient, and creative teaching tools which involve the background of experience of the students and provide them with useful methodologies that generate greater awareness of the ethical implications in the daily processes of decision making but keep clear of moralistic preaching.
Objectives
The ultimate focus of the seminar is on the implementation of ethical principles in unsettled contexts. The seminar seeks:
* To provide a consultative forum in order to share methods of teaching, case studies, and relevant inputs on the topic of international business ethics, especially in the Asian context, developing workable strategies to combat corruption, enhance environmental protection, and to promote whistle-blowing, intellectual property rights, consumer rights, etc.;
* To provide a forum for sharing insights from relevant Asian philosophies and drawing on spiritual resources such as the Upanishads, Tirukkural, Daoism, Confucianism, Mohism, Legalism (Han Feizi) etc. as appropriate underpinning of the key values of international business ethics; the seminars would like to set a ground work for the promotion of universally common values
* To introduce to methods that would enable the participants of the workshop to better implement ethical codes, leadership and personal development programs;
* To facilitate the publication of textbooks and other teaching materials that draw particular inspiration from the spiritual and cultural traditions of Asian (especially Chinese) societies;
* To strengthen the network of teachers and practitioners of business ethics (ethics officers) in the East Asian region and to explore appropriate communicative structures of cooperation.
* To evaluate efforts to introduce oaths within the business education (see the Harvard initiative)
Working hours
August 20 and August 21, 9.00 am – 12.00 noon; 2:00 pm – 6.00 pm
Coordinator
Dr. Antonette Palma-Angeles, Ateneo de Manila & Dr. Stephan Rothlin, CIBE, Beijing
Position Paper
Each delegation has to appoint a speaker who is to deliver a speech of 15 – 20 minutes related to a position paper which each participants is required to send to the organizing committee before July 20, 2010, related to the above mentioned topics (2-4 pages).
Drawing on relevant concepts and principles of business ethics, major ethical theories, and the spiritual resources of the East, the facilitators will encourage participants
- to share their most effective teaching methods,
- to engage in a comparative dialogue in light of other contextual settings and cultural backgrounds, and
- to develop strategies for enhancing teaching effectiveness.
Facilitators may confront the participants with typical scenarios and cases (by e.g. multi-media presentations, role play, newspaper clippings, etc.) from the business world that call for ethical judgment and decision-making so as to strengthen their moral sensibility in an ever changing environment of high ethical complexity. Participants are encouraged to utilize specific spiritual resources of Asian wisdom traditions in their search for a new approach to business ethics that is culturally sensitive and particularly well suited for application in their respective social environments.
