On the evening of Mar. 28th,2012, Prof. Liu Baocheng, Director of CIBE, attended the UIBE Start-up lectureon the Total Journey of Harmonious Energy.
During the lecture, Prof. Liu contended that the foundation of Economics is to find the solution to the problem of resource scarcity. There are two key points in the solution: higher efficiency in terms of materials, and cultivation of sustainable development. Using a series of numbers,Prof. Liu displayed the urgency of the situation. For example, the total oil reserves of the United States could provide for 150-days, while that of China could last only 30. ‘If a war between China and US became reality, the only explanation is energy. Although 69 Chinese enterprises were listed in the 2011 Fortune 500, Chinese oil efficiency is only 1/23 that of US XOM. Furthermore, profit per person is less than 1/50 that of US XOM. Prof. Liu also pointed out that the “three high” development mode—high pollution, high-energy consumption and high resourceconsumption—that China utilizes needs to be reformed. Prof. Liu asserted that these problems should be solved through industries upgrading, increased environmental protection, energy conservation and emission reduction. Total is described as an excellent role model for the new development mode, while ConocoPhillips, who contaminated 840 square kilometers water area of China, provides a counter-example. According to the current Chinese legislation, only 0.2 million Yuan was paid in reparations. The year 2012 is the 20th anniversary of the Rio Declaration, in which solutions to the issue of sustainable development were discussed. It was determined that only through an increase in knowledge could students affect more people.Prof. Liu also expressed gratitude to Total, who hosted the campus lecture on the Journey of Harmonious Energy, for the opportunity to familiarize people with how enterprises live out social responsibility. The CIBE continues to support campus activities on companies’ social responsibilities, and increasing collegiate students’ awareness of such issues.
Following Prof. Liu’s lecture were keynote speeches from three Total Energy Ambassadors of UIBE. Each speeches respectively focused onproving UIBE’s energy saving achievements using data, talking about energy saving around us, anddiscussing the paucity of Chinese energy saving actions compared to different countries. Through these lectures, Prof. Liu affirmed students’ energy saving behaviors in daily life. He explained that only one battery deprives one square meter land of fertilityfor 20 years. Even further, drinking one bottle of water in flight costs four liters of gasoline. Meanwhile, he called on the students to pay more attention to the established UIBE Collegiate Social Responsibility Association and participate in more social responsibility activities.
During the lecture, Total provided detailed explanations on the regulations of the “Energy for the world, Energy from you and me” Beijing Design Contest for Energy Conservation and Environment Protection.Afterward, a Total-sponsored showing of the documentary <ocean>broughtthe lecture to a perfect end.
