Insights for the leaders of the future
----Opening Ceremony of the 3rd Session of
the Collegiate Social Responsibility Summer Camp

At the 9:30am of June 16th, 2012, the third session of the Collegiate Social Responsibility Summer Camp began in room 439 of Ningyuan Building, at the University of Business and Economics (UIBE). Ms. Gaohuan and Ms. Liu Pinrui from the Center of International Business Ethics (CIBE) were present at the ceremony.

After each camper gave a brief self-introduction, Ms. Gao gave a general introduction of CIBE and presented an overview of the pyramid theory of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and its development in China. She made the case that the public can only actively participate and engage with domestic corporations on matters of social responsibility if they have developed awareness of CSR. Social responsibility and legal responsibility are prerequisites for an enterprise to survive, but only ethical and philanthropic responsibilities can be incorporated into the category of CSR. A combination of traditional Chinese ethics and modern Western management styles will be an inevitable trend for the development of domestic CSR. At last, Ms. Gao expressed three expectations to the summer campers. First, be personally responsible for one’s safety, lifestyle, and study habits. Second, interact actively with other campers, professors, and institutional representatives. Third, disseminate the knowledge learnt in the summer camp to other people after the conclusion of camp activities. Finally, the representative of the Collegiate Social Responsibility Association of UIBE presented a comprehensive overview of the work they have done in the past year.

This ceremony provides the platform for campers to get familiar with each other. By participating in lectures, workshops and field trips, campers are expected to learn hands-on experience and a better understanding of Social Responsibility in different areas. This summer camp will provide a foundation for participants to become positive moral agents in their future careers.
