On August 8th, Le Ping, a professor at UIBE, gave a lecture on “research and methods”. She explained the steps of good researching: create a plan, collect materials, make analysis and finally write the report.
Prof. Le raised the question, “What does volunteer mean?” I was confused by this simple question. I knew what volunteer activity was, such as planting trees and taking freshmen to visit the senior house. However, the professor stated that good volunteers needed certain knowledge, ability as well as interest and will. So, it might be the time for me to be a volunteer to gain experience and to appreciate the value of life.
Another thought-provoking question Prof. Le asked was, “How much freedom do you have after being controlled by a small PC?” This reminded me of the current phenomenon of university students’ constant interaction with mobile phones and laptops. For example, you cannot see one of my friends without their mobile phones, regardless of what they are doing, whether it be eating, walking or sleeping. It is quite unhealthy. We should not be trapped by this little gadget and let electronic products influence our lives so drastically.
Prof. Le emphasized the differences between art and science students’ characters and their effects on how they research. Art students should be aware of their greater sensibility and not let feelings override sense. Papers need to be built on investigation and research.
In conclusion, we should get rid of bad study habits and find efficient and correct ways to study.
