On the morning of July 21, 2012, under the leadership of Ms. Liu Pinrui, Project Le ader of CIBE’s Social Entrepreneurship Program, campers of the 3 rd Collegiate Social Responsibility Summer Camp arrived at the Outward Bound Training Center in the suburbs of Beijing.
The coaches divided the students into two teams. Each team was asked to elect a leader and assistant leader, make a team flag, and chose a team name, song and slogan. Then led by their coaches, the two teams began games such as “speed 60 seconds” and other outward-bound activities. The games and activities were meant as teambuilding and trust exercises.
After a short break at noon, the campers proceeded to the next activities. Because of the heavy rain, the coaches had to cancel the outdoor arrangements and switch to in-house training programs.
The coaches introduced the students with two warm-up activities. The first one is “the opposite password,” which asked students to act like the opposite of the c oaches, the first person to make a mistake is out. The eight winners judged the second round. The second game was filled with laughter. First off, each student was asked to choose an adjective with an ABB form, then they acted as a large teapot by twisting their bodies. Each camper displayed his or her “teapot” in front of the entire group to the campers delight.
The last game was thought provoking. At the beginning, the coaches only told the students that it was a jigsaw puzzle and divided them into seven groups. Each group got five boards, a task list and instructions to complete the task in one hour. Under the guidance of some students, all the campers shared their resources and allocated their time. Eventually with everyone’s efforts, the tasks were completed in 42 minutes.
In the reflection and conclusion part of the day, many campers proposed constructive suggestions. They also had a further understanding of the division of labor within a team and how to achieve the maximized utilization of group resources effectively.
Finally, the coaches gave a passionate summary. The students reviewed the leadership, insight and other qualities they acquired through the training. A pleasant and fruitful day ended.
