The Asian Dimension of Teaching International Business Ethics

The Center for International Business Ethics (CIBE) co-hosted a conference in Manila, Philippines on August 23 – 25. The other hosts included Gov. Jose B. Fernandez, Jr. Ethics Center and the John Gokongwei School of Management. The purpose of the annual conference is to discuss various ways to make teaching business ethics more effective in Asia, as well as discuss opportunities for support and collaboration among various universities and centers.
 
On August 24, Dr. Kirk Hanson of the Markkula Center, Santa Clara University, delivered the morning keynote speech. He introduced the steps to ethical decision making developed by the Markkula and shared his experience of teaching business ethics. Dr. Priya Rajeev of the Center for Business Ethics and Corporate Governance, Loyola Institute of Business Administration delivered the afternoon keynote speech. Dr. Rajeev focused on the dimension of teaching business ethics in India. She shared the strengths and weaknesses of current programs and discussed possible ways to enhance the current teaching.  
 
On August 25, Dr. Dennis McCann of CIBE delivered the last keynote of the conference. The title of his presentation, “Business Ethics at the Movies,” involved showing video clips from Modern Times and It’s a Wonderful Life and discussing the various aspects of business ethics that are presented in the films.
 
The conference ended with a discussion on how to continue fostering communication and growth among the different schools involved. Ideas presented included the harnessing of Internet networks to create a platform for discussion among schools, the use of social media to reach students, and a consensus that the conference should continue for the next three years.
