On November 20th, 2012, Sino-French “Green Solidarity” workshop is held jointly by the French Embassy and the Agency Francaise Development in French Embassy in Beijing. Representatives from governmental agencies, transnational enterprises, domestic NGOs and other agencies attended the workshop, and discussed the operating experience of specific programs of “green solidarity”. Professor Liu Baocheng was invited to the workshop and delivered a speech entitled “Green Solidarity in China”.
Professor Liu compared the development status of China to Eastern Europe during its juvenile growth stage, with its rapid development accompanied by the problem of failing to match the speed. Professor Liu thought that the main drivers behind the environmental fragility are industrialization, urbanization, motorization, export craze, energy structure, corporate priority and consumerism. He presented a series of data to demonstrate that there is still a huge gap between China and the world average level in terms of energy consumption, industrial structure and capacity efficiency. According to the report of the Ministry of Environmental Protection of China, the trend of China’s environment is characterized by overall deterioration and regional improvement. An investigation launched in Sichuan Province demonstrated that people are willing to achieve economic development at a certain level of expense to the environment. Interestingly people with a higher education background are more inclined to such kind of viewpoint.
The French Embassy and the Agency Francaise Development have always put emphasis on promoting social responsibility. The representatives of this workshop extended their gratitude to Professor Liu and hoped that they could cooperate with CIBE in many other aspects. |
