CSR Practice in the Hotel Industry

Date:2013-11-20 16:32:23

It had been more than a week since the camp opening ceremony, but the length of time did nothing to diminish our passion. On August 6th, we enjoyed a visit to the Crowne Plaza Beijing Sun Palace.

Ms. Chi Peihong, the HR manager of this hotel, first introduced to us the InterContinental Hotels Group to which the hotel belonged to.. InterContinental Hotels Group, founded in 1777, is a multinational hotel company headquartered in the UK. It is the largest hotel company in the world in regards to the number of rooms-totaling 675,982 as of December 2012- and has over 4,600 hotels across over 100 countries. Its brands include Candlewood Suites, Crowne Plaza, Even, Holiday Inn, Holiday Inn Express, Hotel Indigo, Hualuxe, InterContinental and Stay bridge Suites. IHG’s winning strategy is to do the right thing, to show they care, to aim higher, to celebrate difference and to work better together.

So how can IHG be so successful? Ms. Chi exposed that their key to success is putting guest satisfaction first. All the hotels under IHG share one common goal, great hotels guests love. Ms. Chi mentioned its corporate responsibility in particular.

They practice social responsibility in many ways, for example IHG commits to environmental sustainability through their online sustainability management program. It is also actively involved in the local communities around its hotels and corporate offices, such as providing accommodation to pupils from Nanpi Primary school. It does a great job in managing risks and supplying safe hotels as well.

After a brief introduction, Erika, a member of hotel staff, gave us a tour of the hotel. We visited the banquet hall, gym, and other entertainment facilities, as well as the mysterious insides of the laundry room and staff canteen. We were so impressed with the room suites that we hope to be able to stay a night in the future

Through today’s visit, we learned a great deal about the hotel industry. If a hotel wants to be as great as those parts of IHG, no doubt it should introduce social responsibility to its staff, guests and community.
